Having created a new class for 2008, that being a 1996 class for the youngsters 0 to 10 bouts, we decided to let little Danny Corke make his debut. After the draw was matched against a Lancashire lad Sean Howard from Skerton ABC who had been in the ring before on 3 occasions having won two of his bouts previously, this bout would not of been made on a club show but due to this being the championships it is luck of the draw and although Danny gave it his all due to the difference in size and experience the Ref stopped the contest in favour of Howard, although upset with the result, this was a learning curve for young Corke who showed good defence work through out the bout but was unable to get the counter off afterwards. Well done to Danny - the minute you step into the ring you are a winner there’s not many that get that far.
Next up was Jake Haigh from Macclesfield against a Jake Whittaker from the Phoenix camp boxing club in Denton, who showed to be a strong boxer coming forward from the start with some big rights, but Haigh dealt with this comfortably scoring of the back foot at the end of the 1st it was 2 a piece, the 2nd was much the same as the 1st with Haigh for me scoring well although this wasn’t reflected in the score and the judges had Haigh down 5 to 3, so going in to the 3rd it was up to haigh and after a word from his corner he took the fight to Whittaker this was a good clean fast round and Haigh managed to pull the score back to 5 a piece so the count back system was applied this is were they count how many punches were registered on the computer and the winner was Hiagh by a clear margin. This has placed Haigh in the East Lancs Golden Gloves Final on the 26th at Bolton good luck.
